Atıf Yılmaz was born in Mersin to a Kurdish family originally from Palu, Elazığ. He attended law school at Istanbul University but left to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul, later remarking that his painting education aided his film directing. He began his film career as a critic, painter, and scriptwriter, then co-directed two films as assistant to Semih Evin in 1950 before directing his first film, 'Kanlı Feryat' (The Bloody Cry). In 1960, he co-founded the production company 'Yerli Film' with actor Orhan Günşıray.

His filmography includes notable works such as 'Hıçkırık', 'Alageyik', 'Keşanlı Ali Destanı', 'Selvi Boylum, Al Yazmalım', 'Mine', and 'Her Name is Vasfiye'. Many of his films carried social messages and tackled taboo subjects; 'Mine' and 'Her Name is Vasfiye' were considered revolutionary for their themes of sexuality and societal reaction. He continued making films even when the Turkish film industry halted production due to economic reasons.
